A Beginner’s Guide to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

In Western culture, yoga is often equated strictly with physical postures (asanas). However, in the foundational text The Yoga Sutras, compiled by Sage Patanjali, physical movement accounts for only a tiny fraction of the discipline. Patanjali defines yoga right at the start: Yoga Chitta Vritti Nirodha—the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

The system is outlined through the Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga), a holistic roadmap for living, ranging from ethical disciplines (Yamas and Niyamas) and breath control (Pranayama) to internal focus (Dharana) and deep absorption (Samadhi). Approaching yoga through this comprehensive framework transforms it from a fitness routine into a profound practice for mental clarity.
